Following retirement from the U.S. Navy, Jess and Dawn Kitchens moved to
Nocona, Texas. In 1995 they were visiting with a neighbor, an electrical
contractor, who complained about a problem he had disposing of leftover
electric wire. After further discussion and some research, Jess picked
up a load of the wire, removed the coating and took it to Dallas for
resale. After a few subsequent trips, Jess asked his neighbor if all
electrical contractors had the same problem. His neighbor said "Yes",
and thus was born Homestead Metals, Inc.
Soon Jess was calling on various other industries throughout North Texas
and Southern Oklahoma. He gradually expanded into all types of
non-ferrous metals and in 2003 expanded into the steel market. Jess
and Dawn incorporated their business in 2004. At that time Dawn's
sister, Danell Hughes, began working part time handling accounting
activities. Danell joined the firm full time in 2007 as General Manager.
From its humble beginnings using a 3/4 ton pickup and two 55 gallon
barrels, Homestead Metals, Inc.
has grown to include a staff of eleven service-oriented employees using
7 trucks, 35 trailers, hundreds of various sized boxes and barrels, four
forklifts, two skid steers and other equipment unique to the recycling
industry.
